Adam LZ’s Formula DRIFT S15 Makes A Comeback

Having been stashed away since joining RTR for the 2021 season, Adam LZ revisits his FD S15 build, addressing the previous issues and turbo lag.

The S15 that launched Adam LZ’s Formula Drift career makes a comeback for a refresh and improvements. After appearing in the 2020 FD season, it has mostly been sitting around since his switch to RTR for 2021.

Following his successful 2024 season, LZ decides to use the downtime to overhaul the Yashio Factory-kitted Nissan Silvia S15, focusing on improved drivability rather than peak power numbers.

The story behind the revival stems from when Adam’s friend and fellow drifter, Matt “The Ginge” Mogensen, borrowed the S15. The high-RPM setup was so laggy that he thought something was broken when attempting parking lot donuts, sparking a rethink of the entire build.

With this in mind, LZ opts for a more conservative new setup, aiming to prioritize responsiveness over peak power. Notable changes include a stock intake manifold for improved torque delivery and a smaller turbo, targeting around 800 horsepower.

It’s not all about the engine, either, as a new Wisefab V3 kit with a BMW front steering rack also upgrades the suspension system. He’s also opted for electric power steering, a game-changing upgrade for the S-chassis, hopefully addressing the persistent power steering issues that plagued the S15 previously.

We’ve sure missed those blingy rims!

During dyno testing, the car showed a much more impressive early boost response, reaching full boost at 3,500 RPM. However, there’s an unexpected power drop-off at higher RPMs.

Despite peaking at just over 680 horsepower, lower than initially targeted, the newfound responsiveness aligns with its intended role as a testing platform for future developments.

Hopefully, we’ll see the S15 back out shredding again soon!
