Often regarded as the most realistic and immersive racing and drifting simulator, Assetto Corsa has set a high bar for virtual motorsports enthusiasts for the past ten years.

With its successor, Assetto Corsa EVO, officially confirmed for a 2024 release for PC gamers, PlayStation racing and drifting fans are eager to know when they’ll be able to tackle the virtual tarmac.

Kunos Simulazioni, the team behind the Assetto Corsa, is gradually trickling the latest information regarding console specifics. Based on past trends in AC history, we expect the PS5 version to launch in 2025 or even early 2026.

The team faces added complications since EVO is confirmed to run on a completely new game engine, adding an extra layer of uncertainty to the console release timeline. This new technology could potentially speed up development, but it might also introduce unforeseen challenges.

Meanwhile, questions still remain for PS4 fans. Is there still tread left on the tires of PlayStation’s last-gen console, or has it reached the end of its racing career?

TL;DR - Assetto Corsa EVO PlayStation Latest Updates

  • PC release confirmed for 2024

  • No official PlayStation release date announced yet
  • PS5 version expected, likely in late 2025 or early 2026
  • PS4 version unlikely due to hardware limitations

When Will Assetto Corsa EVO Be Released On PS5?

Digital Bros, Kunos Simulazioni’s parent company, confirmed that EVO will be released on “other systems” beyond PC. While they haven’t named these “other systems” yet, it strongly indicates that PS5 is in the pipeline alongside the Xbox Series X|S release.

While Assetto Corsa EVO’s PC release is confirmed for 2024, the PlayStation 5 version’s launch date remains unannounced. However, based on the series’ history, we can make some educated guesses.

The original Assetto Corsa was released for PC in 2014, with the PS4 version arriving two years later in 2016. Similarly, Assetto Corsa Competizione launched on PC in 2019, reaching PS4 in 2020 and PS5 in 2022.

Given this pattern, we can expect Assetto Corsa EVO to drift onto PS5 sometime in 2025 or early 2026. This timeline allows Kunos to fine-tune the game for PlayStation hardware after the initial PC release.

Since two AC games (Assetto Corsa and Competizione) have been released on PlayStation, Kunos may have optimized its development process for console ports, potentially leading to a faster turnaround for Assetto Corsa EVO’s PS5 version.

However, it’s important to remember that EVO is built on a new engine, which might introduce fresh challenges. The new engine could significantly improve graphics and physics, but it might also require additional development time.

As always, game development can be unpredictable, and these are just rough guidelines based on previous generations. Kunos confirmed they’ll share more information soon. Once they do, we’ll update this article with the latest information.

Will The PS4 Be Able To Handle EVO’s Torque?

Kunos hasn’t mentioned anything regarding a PlayStation 4 version yet, but we’re not expecting good news for PS4 gamers. Given that EVO is built on a brand-new engine designed to maximize the potential of current-gen hardware and high-end PCs, we expect the performance demands of the latest addition to the series to be too high for the PS4’s capabilities.

The original Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione both made it to PS4, but EVO is expected to bring a significant leap forward in terms of graphics and physics. Features expected to make EVO shine on PC (and potentially PS5) include improved lighting, more detailed car models, and more complex track environments. We also hope to see drifting-focused improvements, such as improved tire smoke. All of these upgrades will likely push the PS4 beyond its limits.

Some gamers also believe that supporting an older console could hold back the game’s development, requiring efforts to adapt it to suit the last-gen hardware. While it’s not impossible that a scaled-down version of EVO will be available on PS4, the odds are slim.

As always, we’ll update this article if Kunos announces any plans for a PS4 version. But for now, PS4 owners who know they’ll want to play EVO might want to consider saving to upgrade to a PS5 or a capable PC before the release, as this will undoubtedly be the best way to get the most out of the latest version.

Is Assetto Corsa EVO The Same As Assetto Corsa 2?

After Kunos decided to rebrand the series, Assetto Corsa EVO is the same game previously rumored to be Assetto Corsa 2. Don’t panic; this isn’t a Competizione-style spin-off, and the name change doesn’t alter the game’s concept or development direction.

Assetto Corsa EVO remains the highly anticipated sequel to the original Assetto Corsa game, designed to push the boundaries of racing simulation once again. “EVO likely stands for “evolution,” suggesting it represents a significant step forward for the series we know and love rather than the disappointing GT3-specific focus of ACC.

Thankfully, this should mean that drifting will return to the series with a diverse roster of vehicles, including plenty of unique drift cars and a wider variety of tracks, bringing back the O.G. Assetto Corsa approach rather than the GT3-focused Competizione.

Will Assetto Corsa EVO Have Mods On PS5?

Mods revolutionized Assetto Corsa for PC players, dramatically expanding the game’s content and capabilities and boosting sales from third-party support.

The drifting community benefited enormously from user-created content. Fans got the opportunity to create just about every car imaginable, from iconic JDM drift missiles to their D1GP or Formula DRIFT favorites, and recreated legendary touge mountain passes and drift-specific circuits like Ebisu to show off their tire-shredding antics.

Here’s how the full wet-weather VR experience looked for VR PC gamers:

These mods didn’t only include drift cars and unique, custom-built tracks, either. They also provided the opportunity for fans to transform the game, introducing day/night cycles, enhanced weather systems, and improved physics that completely transformed the experience.

However, consoles are unfortunately much more closed when it comes to modifications to gaming files than what you can do on PCs. The ability to freely edit game files and create custom content is typically limited or non-existent on PlayStation platforms.

While some PS5 games have introduced limited modding support, it’s extremely unlikely that Assetto Corsa EVO will offer the same level of customization seen in the PC version. Console versions of racing sims often focus on providing a polished, out-of-the-box experience rather than an endlessly customizable platform.

If modding in Assetto Corsa is a deal-breaker for you, which we’ll admit it has been for us, then it may be the time to consider opting for a decent-spec gaming PC, especially if you’re currently gaming on a PS4. This way, you’ll be future-proofed to enjoy the full potential of what Assetto Corsa EVO offers, including maximizing its potential VR possibilities. Best of all, you’ll get to do all this even sooner, too!
