The legendary street racing series, which earned a cult following in Japan as ‘Shutokou Battle’ (首都高バトル) in 1994 before transforming into ‘Tokyo Xtreme Racer’ for the international market in 1999, is making a dramatic comeback following a 19-year hiatus.

If you’re new to the series, it’s known for drawing inspiration from the legendary Wangan Midnight manga series and real-world illegal highway racing culture, with players tearing through neon-lit expressways in intense one-on-one arcade-style racing battles.

With no signs of a new game since 2006, series developer Genki shocked fans with a surprise announcement late last year, stating that the unique highway racing game is being rebooted for a new generation.

They then gave the hardcore fanbase an unexpected start to 2025 by declaring that the game is set for an initial early-access PC release via Steam on January 23, 2025.

Although the game is best known for its appearances on PlayStation and Dreamcast consoles, with the first-ever game launching on the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo), the PC release will help the team initially work directly with the fans to deliver the best version possible.

“The reason we chose PC first was because we believe it will allow the most ease of access to our fans all over the world as well as allow us to tweak and improve the game as quickly as we can,” stated Genki on their X (formerly Twitter) page.

In this statement, “PC first” clearly hints that TXR will hit other devices after the early access period, which is expected to last four months, ending around May 2025.

The new early-access TXR is set in a “sealed-off future Tokyo” with 180 kilometers (just over 110 miles) of freshly recreated highways, including the famous C1 line, and half of the final game’s planned story mode.

There will also be 200 rival characters, each bringing unique storylines and narratives, including the return of fan favorites like ‘Midnight Rose’ and teams like ‘Rolling Guy.’

There will be 50 cars available at TXR’s early access PC launch, with more planned for the full release.

This is the current list of cars we know will appear in Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s 2025 reboot. There are 42, with the final eight still yet to be announced.
