Car enthusiasts from across Japan and beyond gathered for the 10th anniversary of Wekfest Japan held at Port Messe in Nagoya. The event brings the most impressive gathering of Japan’s stance culture, showcasing the ultimate builds and proving that the aftermarket tuning scene is still alive and well in the land of the rising sun.

What Is Wekfest Japan?

Wekfest, originally from San Francisco, came to Japan a decade ago to showcase the motherland’s uniqueness in car customization.

What started as an experiment quickly became a cultural phenomenon, bridging the gap between Eastern and Western car enthusiasts. Until now, Wekfest Japan remains at the forefront of stance culture, and the 10th-anniversary event showcases how the tuning scene has evolved over the past decade.

The event’s Japanese success can be attributed to its unique blend of EDM (European Domestic Market) and JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) styles. Influenced by global trends, this fusion resonated with Japanese builders who were already pushing the boundaries of customization, maintaining their distinctive Japanese flair while being part of a larger, global community.

The EDM Invasion

It’s fascinating to see the ever-growing number of Euro vehicles at these Japanese shows. While JDM cars are popular imports across the globe, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, Japan’s Euro (EDM) scene is seemingly thriving more than ever.

A lineup of perfectly customized Porsche 911s displayed the Japanese approach to European classics, adding subtle modifications and uniqueness to the original German design.

The selection, which ranges from supercars such as Porsche, Aston Martin, and Ferrari to Mercedes, BMW, and Audi, is mind-blowing. There were so many stand-out vehicles that Speedhunters dedicated an entire article to the show’s Euro imports.

A Diverse Selection Of Classic JDM Icons

Of course, it wasn’t entirely dominated by EDM cars. It’ll come as no surprise that one of the standout aspects has always been its celebration of everything JDM.

Nothing was left out, with displays ranging from old-school RX7s and AE86s to every Silvia and Skyline you can imagine. Hell, even Civics managed to get their fair share of coverage!

Beyond Stance – Performance Meets Functionality

Thankfully, it wasn’t all airbags and trailers, either. While stance is undoubtedly a key focus of Wekfest Japan, the event also celebrates builds that prioritize performance and functionality alongside aesthetics. Several builds paid homage to Japan’s motorsport heritage.

It wasn’t all about fancy body kits and deep dish wheels. The restomod trend was also well-represented, with builds combining classic aesthetics and modern performance. A standout Toyota AE86 Corolla showcased this approach, featuring a fuel-injected 4A-GE with individual throttle bodies hidden beneath a period-correct exterior.

However, despite the abundance of static builds, the tide is shifting. Static drops were once the sought-after norm in Japan, but it’s clear that air suspension is gaining significant traction in the JDM stance scene.

Looking Ahead To Wekfest Japan’s Second Decade

It’ll be intriguing to see how it pushes boundaries over the next decade. Will the growing presence of European builds alongside the traditional JDM classics continue, or will there be another shift in direction? Could an influx of EVs change the static scene, or will it continue to evolve without embracing electrification?
